Because Ross's journals are effectively his uncensored life's work, we owe it to him to point out that he expressed his own dissatisfaction with some of his early notes: In 1945, while serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Poona, India, after re-reading his notes from page 1, he wrote on page 1967:
"My early notes, especially Volumes 2 and 3, are appalling even for their simple ignorance and inaccuracy.
They are quite unfit for any human eye."
Later, when he reviewed his notes in 1953 and 1957, he only re-read from about page 1000 in volume 5.
